Paradise Lost and Found: A Fresh Look at Adam and Eve

I’m sure you’ve heard the story of Adam and Eve. It’s so well-known that almost everyone, unless they’re living under a rock like I sometimes feel, is familiar with it. But let me take a moment to retell the story with a bit more detail.

Once upon a time, in a garden far, far away, the first two humans, Adam and Eve, lived. Now, this wasn’t just any garden. It was the Garden of Eden, a paradise beyond any human imagination.

Adam was the first to arrive in the garden, created from the dust by God himself. He was living the dream, naming animals and enjoying the lush greenery. But after a while, he started to feel a bit lonely. So, God decided to give him a companion, Eve, created from one of Adam’s ribs. Talk about being close to his heart!

Life in the Garden of Eden was pretty sweet. Adam and Eve spent their days hanging out, eating fruit, and chatting with God. Those were the days.  But there was one rule they had to follow: they were not to eat from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil.

But then, along came a crafty serpent. He convinced Eve that the fruit from the forbidden tree was not only delicious but would also make her as wise as God. Eve, who probably thought an apple a day keeps the doctor away, or she just wants to be wise.  I don’t understand where she is going to use that wisdom when you are safe in God’s paradise.  And you have God with you.  But she took a bite and then shared it with Adam.

Well, that’s when things went south. Suddenly, they realized they were naked and felt ashamed. When God found out what they had done, He was disappointed. As a consequence, they were banished from the Garden of Eden.

If there’s one thing I have learned from Adam and Eve, it’s that breaking the rules in the Book can lead to serious consequences. Like, say, getting kicked out of paradise. Yap, we got kicked out and life was hard ever since.  This is what it is living without God.  So every time we disobey Him we just become farther and farther away from Him.

Adam and Eve had the whole garden, but were tempted by the one thing they couldn’t have. The lesson? Sometimes, we’ve got to focus on our abundance, not the apple we can’t eat.  You have the whole garden but why oh why we always want what we cannot have.  There is a reason why we cannot have something.  Because it is bad for us.  That’s all.  No other reason.

Eve got talked into eating the fruit by a talking snake. If that doesn’t teach us to be careful about who we take advice from, I don’t know what will. So, remember the serpent next time a questionable character offers you an ‘amazing’ opportunity.  Anything questionable, run.  A talking snake? A get-rich scheme? Anything too good to be true.  I learned not to even ask a question.  I don’t even look.  I just walk away.

When God asked them about the fruit, Adam pointed at Eve, and Eve pointed at the serpent. It was the first recorded game of ‘pass the blame. The lesson? Own up to your mistakes. It’s much more dignified than playing the blame game.

Even after the apple fiasco, God made clothes for Adam and Eve. God provides for us even when we make mistakes and even forgives us. Now this is the moment to truly reflect. Our God is so good to us. Even when we disobey and listen to the talking snake instead of Him, He still ensures that we are not left out in the cold, without clothing.

Now let’s envision a world where the apple remains uneaten. Imagine what could have been if humanity had not succumbed to deception. Relationships would flourish in peace, the serpent would have no purpose, and life would be effortless.  The economy would be fascinating since everyone’s needs will be met.  Most importantly, we would dwell in closeness with our Creator. This is eternal bliss.  This is Heaven.

But it is not too late. Yes, we stumbled and were deceived, yet there is still a chance to alter our path. The Garden of Eden belongs to the past, but God has offered us hope from the very beginning. Right after Adam and Eve disobeyed, He spoke in Genesis 3:15: “And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.” God is so good that right after man fell, He already planned to redeem us.  Then Jesus came, He died, and He resurrected, conquering death itself. He assured us in John 3:16, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” There is Eternal Life who believes in Jesus.

If you want to have a changed life and the Promise of Eternal life, I invite you to join me in this prayer:

Father Almighty,

I know that I am a sinner and I ask for Your forgiveness. I believe Jesus Christ is Your Son. I believe that He died for my sins and that You raised Him to life. I want to trust Him as my Savior and follow Him as Lord, from this day forward. Guide my life and help me to do Your will. I pray this in the name of Jesus. Amen.”
